Riot Games is currently preparing the biggest update in the history of League of Legends. Known internally by the code name League Next, this titanic undertaking promises a new client, a complete visual overhaul of Summoner's Rift, gameplay changes, and a redesigned experience for new players.
Here's everything we know to date about this overhaul, expected in 2027, updated continuously.
What exactly is League Next?
League Next is the internal code name for a modernization of League of Legends, revealed publicly in December 2025. A Bloomberg report, written by journalist Cecilia D'Anastasio, unveiled the project on December 18, 2025, describing it as the most significant update since the game's launch in 2009.
Caught off guard by the leak, Riot Games responded through Andrei "Meddler" van Roon, head of the League Studio, by releasing a developer video on X originally planned for January 2026, as part of the traditional season launch moment. Alongside Paul "Pabro" Bellezza, executive producer of League of Legends, he officially confirms the project's existence and outlines its main features.
The central idea put forward is that this is not a new game, but a transformation of the existing game, massive enough to rival what one would expect from a full-fledged sequel.
League of Legends 2? The answer is no
This is the first thing Riot wanted to clarify. For several months, rumors had been circulating about a "League of Legends 2," fueled notably by a Chinese insider known as Summoner Park, who had published information on Weibo about a new engine and entirely rewritten code, before the message was deleted.
Riot put an end to the speculation.
